Find out how much water you can count on before you build

Bioresources Africa helps farms, mines and towns across southern and central Africa work out how reliable their surface water really is. We use hydrological modelling, satellite data and field surveys, and we explain the results in plain terms.

What we do

Five related services, all aimed at the same question: will there be enough water, and how sure can we be?

Chart of modelled reservoir storage over several decades

Surface water modelling

A rainfall and runoff model built for your catchment, showing how often water will actually be available over the long run.

Survey boat on a reservoir with a base station set up on the shore

Bathymetric surveys

Boat-based and ground surveys that measure the bed of a dam or river basin, so storage volumes are based on measurements.

Satellite map of irrigated fields showing crop condition

Remote sensing and GIS

Satellite imagery turned into useful answers about vegetation, land cover, deforestation, crops and forestry.

A lake with hills in the distance

Climate change analysis

Climate projections adjusted to your site and fed into the water model, so you can see how supply may change over the life of the project.

Elevation map of a sample area, coloured by height

Satellite elevation data

A lower-cost alternative to a full ground survey, tested against on-site measurements and reliable in most conditions.

Who we work with

Our clients are people who need to make a decision that depends on water, and who need an answer they can defend to a lender, a board or a regulator.

  • Irrigation and agricultural developments
  • Mining operations
  • Towns and utilities planning urban water supply
  • Infrastructure projects such as dams and reservoirs
  • Land, forestry and farming operations that need vegetation, crop or deforestation monitoring

We also work with larger consultancies and engineering firms that are running a project in Africa and need specialist water input on the ground. We can take on a defined part of the work, such as the hydrology, a survey or the satellite analysis, and hand back results that slot into your report.

Much of our work is in countries north of South Africa, where rainfall and river flow records are patchy. We are used to working with limited data and being clear about what it can and can't tell you.
